Meters don't save energy or water, they merely provide measurement data. It is what is done with the data that will ultimately lead to savings.
Monitoring and Targeting (M&T) is an energy and cost saving management technique, successfully used by major energy users for many years. Advances in automatic meter reading technologies and a reduced cost of metering has led to the recent development of dedicated energy management software based on the principals of M&T, but within the budget of moderate energy users, such as schools and SME's.
Correlating energy consumption to energy drivers such as outside air temperature, production units, occupancy levels or another utility such as compressed air or steam allows the relationship between the two to be established. This input-output analysis will identify the element of fixed, non-throughput-related consumption and allow the efficiency of the process to be evaluated.
Targets can be set using historical or theoretical data and consumption continuously monitored against these targets automatically within the software; highlighting excessive consumption and preventing unnecessary consumption.
Many M&T software packages also include financial modules that allow invoices to be validated and energy consumption to be reported in £ per hour, day or month; allowing energy costs to be allocated to business cost centres.
