DML Case Study .

The support that we receive from C3 Resources is exceptional.  Product support, service and back-up is first class and we have had over two years of excellent results.  C3 are totally dedicated to bringing energy awareness and monitoring to the top of the agenda for all energy users and their drive and commitment has definitely produced results for us."

At DML we have an annual energy spend in the region of £11 million. Rising energy costs, along with a responsibility to minimise our environmental impact has made reducing our energy consumption a major priority.  We have been working with the Carbon Trust for three years now and one of the first recommendations that our consultant made was that we improved our metering of our two main energy streams, electricity and gas.

The amr system was installed and the benefits were obvious immediately.  We could see what impact our energy reduction measures were having and we could see the impact that different processes made at different times of the day.  The benefits have made a very significant contribution to our reduction in gas consumption.  Using the data, we can now see exactly how much gas our boilers use at different firing rates and different boiler configurations.

The success of this program has meant that, compared to 2004, we have reduced our gas consumption by 32%.  In turn, this has reduced our CO2 emissions by over 30%, or 10,000 tonnes.  This gas would have had a market value in excess of £750,000 in 2006.  In 2004, we became regulated under the EU ETS.  Under this scheme we are given strict allowances for Carbon emissions, our energy savings mean that we will be within our set target and will not be exposed to risk by having to purchase extra Carbon credits.  Our M&T software and amr system also ensures full compliance with the scheme in terms of monitoring energy usage.

We are planning to extend the coverage of the electricity metering system to capture to major energy users within the site; this will identify further opportunities to reduce our consumption.  The use of LP Air and Steam are also being considered for inclusion on the system.  This will mean that we will have better visualisation of where the energy is going than we ever have had before.

As a result of our savings we are considered an industry leader in our sector and, in 2006, we became the first dockyard to become accredited under the EEAS.
